The next day I still felt bad about Jax getting into a fight trying to protect me from Dirk and his octopus hands, so I knocked on his door bearing gifts. I thought the magic of Krispy Kreme would distract him from the pain of his bruised hand and split eyebrow long enough for him to forgive me.

When he answered the door, he looked freshly dressed.

“Hey.” His smile was big as he opened the door wider to let me in. “I was just about to call you.”

I held up the box of Krispy Kremes. “I come bearing gifts.”

“Original glazed?”

I nodded and he grinned, taking the box from me. “I think I might love you.”

“That’s because I bribe you with sugar,” I said, walking in and closing the door behind me. My eyes dropped to his hand. “How does it feel?”

“Like it slammed into the face of a deserving douche bag,” he said opening the box of donuts and offering me one. I shook my head.

“I don’t know if you’re telling me it hurts. Or if it’s okay.”

He grinned as he devoured his bribe. “Relax. It’s fine.” He held up his hand and wiggled his fingers. “See. They all work.”

“And your eyebrow?”

He wiggled that too. “You forget I grew up with an older asshat brother. We use to get stuck into it as kids.”

That explained Jimmy’s impressive fighting skills during the press pit melee. Childhood training.

I sat on the edge of his bed. “I still feel bad.”

Jax closed the box of Krispy Kreme and leaned against the counter looking every kind of sexy, his strong jaw working beneath a hint of stubble as he finished the rest of his donut. “If you really want to make it up to me, you can.”

I raised an eyebrow; unsure what I would be getting myself into if I agreed. “How?”

“Be my plus one at this thing I’ve got to go to?”

“Thing?”

He nodded. “A friend of mine is getting married.”

“Okay.” It sounded simple enough. “When?”

“Tomorrow.”

I shrugged. “Sure. Sounds good.”

“In Jacksonville. Florida.”

My mouth dropped. “But we’re in Houston.”

Jax grinned. “Do I have to keep reminding you that I’m a very famous rock star and have rock star super powers?”

“Really? Do you wear a cape?”

“No. But I have a super-fast jet plane.”

I grinned. “Ok, Captain America.”

“So will you come?”

“Of course.”

He smiled and grabbed my hand. “Come on.”

“Where are we going?” I asked as he pulled me up off the bed.

“I’m taking you shopping.” He grabbed his wallet off the table and pushed it into his back pocket.

“What for?”

“If you’re flying across the country to go to a wedding with me, then I can at least buy you a new outfit.”

I shook my head and sat down on the bed again. “Nuh-uh. The last time someone insisted I go clothes shopping resulted in me buying too many short, tight dresses and getting a Brazilian wax job.”

Jax’s head shot up. “You have a Brazilian?”

The look on his face was a mix between complete surprise and rampant, unrelenting desire.
